Title: Fourth Book of Alberti: Public Works Project Type: Research Instructor: Jane Zaloga Year: 2023
Project Premise:
This project engages with Book IV of Leon Battista Alberti’s Ten Books on Architecture, focusing on his discourse on public works. It interprets Alberti’s theoretical propositions on the ideal siting and organization of a city—its orientation, geographic considerations, and infrastructural hierarchy—and translates them into a visual collage. The work emphasizes Alberti’s strategies for establishing a city’s essential structures, including fortifications, civic buildings, streets, and public amenities, while also exploring the relationship between spatial order and civic life. Through the medium of collage, the project reinterprets Alberti’s Renaissance principles for contemporary reflection, visually synthesizing the key arguments of Book IV into an accessible and interpretive form.
