About

I am Yicheng, and I also go by Alan. I recently graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a minor in Art History. My work in architecture is grounded in a deep curiosity about the foundations of our built environment — how spaces are shaped not only by design intentions but also by the complex social, economic, and cultural forces that govern them. Trained as both a designer and a researcher, I focus on uncovering the underlying structures that shape how people live, work, and inhabit spaces, particularly within contexts undergoing rapid transformation. My recent research examines the intersection of e-commerce and rural development in China, exploring how shifts in economic models reshape not only architecture but also patterns of life, land use, and social relations. Through this work, I aim to question established narratives of progress and revitalization, while searching for more sustainable, human-centered alternatives.

Beyond my academic and professional pursuits, I find inspiration through exploring the world — whether by traveling to new countries, walking through cities and landscapes, hiking remote trails, or skiing in the mountains. These experiences continually sharpen my attention to the ways environments shape human experience and deepen my commitment to architecture as a discipline grounded in observation, inquiry, and care for place.
